23 May What Do You Want? Really.
Are you living your life from day to day? Do you know what you stand for, and what really matters to you? Are you really engaged at work or would you rather be someplace else? It’s a fact of life that we all need a sense of purpose in order to be fulfilled and happy. However, the far-reaching and positive effects of it are only now emerging.
Chicago’s Rush University Medical Centre recently completed a study which found that people with a clear purpose are happier and healthier overall, and are less likely to develop disabilities or die prematurely. Older people with purpose were also twice less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease because of their focus on establishing and working towards achieving personal goals.
So many people struggle with their ‘reason for being’, resulting in lack of direction, lack of engagement at work and associated poor health.
But there is great news!
Following decades of research into human behaviour and strengths, Gallup Global statistics company has found that the best way for individuals to discover a clear direction in life is to identify what their innate talents are. Gallup has found that people who use their natural strengths every day embrace a far more effective approach to improving their performance and ‘joie de vivre’ rather than by trying to improve their weaknesses. And it’s the best way for employer’s to maximise their employee’s performance. Gallup research has found that employees’ who know and use their strengths are not only six times more likely to be engaged in their work and therefore less likely to leave, but the huge benefit is that the company becomes more robust and the bottom line is boosted!
In fact, Gallup statistics show that businesses that develop their employees’ strengths have been found to achieve 8% greater productivity at the employee level, 13% greater productivity at the team level and 9% greater profitability at the team level.
